Presenting
Chloe is a passionate public historian who loves sharing history with anyone who will listen!
I believe there is little value in keeping research solely within academia and that all research should have public outputs. I have loved public history since my first year at university and I’ve since worked to ensure everything I do makes an impact. During my undergraduate degree, I began working for the Citizen’s Project at Royal Holloway under Dr Matthew Smith, where I presented for the first time at Windsor Castle about Charles II.
After this, I produced projects, working on a podcast about women in politics for the citizen’s project, and presenting a few more videos, a sample linked below. I interned at Twenty Twenty Television over the summer of 2019, working mostly on the BBC2 show, ‘A house through time’. I then went on to win the Herringham scholarship to undertake an MA in Public History at Royal Holloway, starting in 2020. I often refer to this as one of the happiest times of my life, with the course rarely feeling like work as I enjoyed it so much. I produced a project called ‘Just Georgians’ which can be viewed at: https://www.justgeorgians.com. As part of this, I created TikTok videos, researching, writing, producing and editing my own work. I also produced a podcast, all linked below.
As part of the CDP PhD scheme, 6 months of funding are awarded so that students can get some experience in industry. I first knew she wanted to be a ‘real historian’ when on a visit to the Tower of London and was thrilled to be able to work with the public engagement team at Historic Royal Palaces. I worked with the social media, public relations and filming team, but also supported the education team through the coronation in 2023. I really enjoyed my time there, and learnt lots about social media and content creation.
The following year, I applied for a placement at History Hit TV. I worked there for three months in 2024 and found it hugely rewarding, working with the SVOD (subscription Video on Demand) service, assisting with research, filming and producing of larger scale doccumentaries. I assisted with Meet the Normans, Pre historic Ireland, Castles in Ireland and Now you see us, amongst others. I also assisted with some youtube filming too, and I hope this is not the end of my TV work. I am interested in getting more time in front of the camera, talking about my research and women and war more generally. I feel I have come along way since the Citizen project filming, but I am proud of it none the less. Please find a sample of my work below:
Charles II, the restoration of the Monarchy and Windsor Castle
This was my first time presenting and using an autocue. I am very grateful for the opportunity and enjoyed working on the project - not least getting to explore the private rooms of Windsor Castle! I have always loved royal history, as exemplified through her time at Historic Royal Palaces. Charles II was a very interesting, and important monarch, loved by many following Cromwell’s time in power. Why not learn more by watching below:
Women’s History
I have always been passionate about women’s history, as is demonstrated by my previous filming. I hope to revisit women’s history through the lens of women at war after the completion of my PhD. Below are two videos I worked on with the Citizen’s project.
Just Georgians
I had great success with her Just Georgians project, achieving a distinction-level masters.
I amassed a large following and over 500k views on her videos about Georgian women across the classes. I enjoy all aspects of women’s history and hopes to revisit this passion post PhD exploring women in war. To the left is one of my highest-viewed videos. I loved the interactive aspect of this media, creating historical discussion in the comments answering questions, and busting myths!
